It’s A Fact – Right-Wingers Have No Compassion!

by StuartEppsteiner

We always knew this but now we know why. The below article is the BEST explanation I have come upon so far that explains why the GOP/TP seems to exhibit such hate toward everything and everybody that does not share their warped opinion of reality. It is a must read if you seek help for the anquish that has built up in the brains of those of us who think. thinkingblue PS: Notice the date is February 17, 2012, I never did get to blog this for some reason but it's too good to let stand idle in my blogging folder. EXCERPT FROM :http://www.alternet.org/story/154194/a_conservative_explains_why_right-wingers_have_no_compassion A Conservative Explains Why Right-Wingers Have No Compassion A former Republican Senate Congressional staffer on why right-wingers think people without insurance deserve to die. February 17, 2012 | Although Mitt Romney used the word “conservative” 19 times in a short speech at the February 10, 2012, Conservative Political Action Conference, the audience he used this word to appeal to was not conservative by any traditional definition. It was right wing. Despite the common American practice of using “conservative” and “right wing” interchangeably, right wing is not a synonym for conservative and not even a true variant of conservatism – although the right wing will opportunistically borrow conservative themes as required. Right-wingers have occasioned much recent comment. Their behavior in the Republican debates has caused even jaded observers to react like an Oxford don stumbling upon a tribe of headhunting cannibals. In those debates where the moderators did not enforce decorum, these right-wingers, the Republican base, behaved with a single lack of dignity. For a group that displays its supposed pro-life credentials like a neon sign, the biggest applause lines resulted from their hearing about executions or the prospect of someone dying without health insurance. Who are these people and what motivates them? To answer, one must leave the field of conventional political theory and enter the realm of psychopathology. Three books may serve as field guides to the farther shores of American politics and the netherworld of the true believer. Most estimates calculate the percentage of Republican voters who are religious fundamentalists at around 40 percent; in some key political contests, such as the Iowa caucuses, the percentage is closer to 60. Because of their social cohesion, ease of political mobilization and high election turnout, fundamentalists have political weight even beyond their raw numbers. An understanding of their leaders, infrastructure and political goals is warranted. Max Blumenthal has done the work in his book “Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party.” Blumenthal investigates politicized fundamentalism and provides capsule bios of such movement luminaries as James Dobson, Tony Perkins, John Hagee and Ted Haggard. The reader will conclude that these authority figures and the flocks they command are driven by a binary, Manichean vision of life and a hunger for conflict. Their minds appear to have no more give and take than that of a terrier staring down a rat hole. Blumenthal examines the childhoods of these religious-right celebrities and reveals a significant quotient of physical and mental abuse suffered at the hands of parents. His analysis of the obvious sadomasochistic element in Mel Gibson's films – so lionized by the right wing – is enough to give one the creeps. But the book is by no means a uniformly depressing slog: the chapter titled “Satan in a Porsche,” about fundamentalist attempts to ban pornography, approaches slapstick. According to the author, the inner life of fundamentalist true believers is the farthest thing from that of a stuffily proper Goody Two Shoes. They seem tormented by demons that those in the reality-based community scarcely experience. That may explain their extraordinary latitude in absolving their political and ecclesiastical heroes of their sins: while most of us might regard George W. Bush as a dry drunk resentful of his father, Newt Gingrich as a sociopathic serial adulterer and Ted Haggard as a pathetic specimen in terminal denial, their followers on the right apparently believe that the greater the sin, the more impressive the salvation – so long as the magic words are uttered and the penitent sinner is washed in the Blood of the Lamb. This explains why people like Gingrich can attend “values voter” forums and both he and the audience manage to keep straight faces. Far from being a purpose-driven life, the existence of many true believers is a crisis-driven life that seeks release, as Blumenthal asserts, in an “escape from freedom.” added by: thinkingblue

Acura TL sedans recalled due to fluid leak in power-steering hose

by StuartEppsteiner

Honda has recalled 52,615 of its 2007-2008 Acura TL sedans because over time, the power steering hose can deteriorate and develop a fluid leak, leading to a loss of power steering assistance. In addition, if fluid leaks onto a catalytic converter it can result in smoke or a fire. To date, no crashes, injuries or fires have been reported in relation to this recall. Owners of vehicles affected by this recall can go to an authorized Acura dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Acura. Dealers will replace the power-steering hose. Notifications will be mailed to vehicle owners beginning in mid-June. In addition to the mailed notifications, consumers can see if their vehicle requires repair by visiting recalls.acura.com or by calling 800-382-2238, and selecting option 4. Check out the Director’s Cut of Current Covers The Tribeca Film Festival, Brought to you by Capital One

by admin3

For many native New Yorkers like myself, the first Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 was a breath of fresh air. The brainchild of Producer Jane Rosenthal and the Taxi Driver himself, Robert De Niro, Tribeca was conceived in response to the attacks of 9/11 as a means of drawing tourism back to the economically-strapped neighborhood. But almost immediately, it turned into something much more than that. In just one short decade, the Tribeca Film Festival has become a world class annual event for the global artistic community. This year the festival was more dynamic than ever, boasting a rich slate of films both documentary and narrative, short and feature-length from all around the globe. It's the rare event where a small, shoestring love story like Kat Coiro's While We Were Here, sits comfortably next to the box-office behemoth The Avengers. Many of the films featured are being seen by audiences for the first time, which is in itself is an intoxicating thing to experience. However even more fun to watch are the directors and actors experiencing audiences for the first time responding to their blood, sweat and celluloid. Current Covers caught up with a few of those filmmakers to get some insight into their films and what Tribeca means to them. added by: ctv

Are the rich America’s job creators?

by StuartEppsteiner

Mitt Romney is running on his record as a really rich guy who created lots and lots and lots of jobs. How many? That depends on when you ask, but for the sake of sanity let's just say he claims lots. But back in March at the TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) Conference in Long Beach, California attendees heard something wonktastically different. Nick Hanauer, one of the founding investors of Amazon gave an eyebrow-raising talk that casts quite a bit of doubt on Mitt Romney's biggest campaign asset… that the rich are super-awesome at creating jobs. Arctic Death Spiral: More Bad News about Sea Ice

by StuartEppsteiner

New ice is less reflective than old ice and absorbs more heat from the Sun, which means it doesn’t just melt faster: it actually speeds up its own melting. By Michael D. Lemonick Published May 16, 2012 The sea ice that blankets the Arctic Ocean each winter peaked in early March this year, as usual, and is now in retreat, en route to its annual minimum extent in September. How low it will go is something scientists worry: ice reflects lots of sunlight back into space, and when the darker ocean underneath is exposed, more sunlight is absorbed to add to global warming. That’s the simple version of the story, but things look even worse when you dig into the details. For one thing, all that open water does re-freeze each winter, but it freezes into a relatively thin layer known as seasonal, or first-year ice. Because it’s so thin, first-year ice tends to melt back quickly the following season, giving the ocean a chance to warm things up even more in what National Snow and Ice Data Center director Mark Serreze has called a “death spiral” that could lead to ice-free Arctic summers by 2030. But it’s worse than that, says a new analysis by scientists at the U.S. Army’s Cold Regions Research Laboratory in Hanover, N.H. “First-year ice is not just thinner, “ said Donald Perovich, lead author of a report in Geophysical Research Letters, in an interview. “We’re also beginning to realize it has other properties.” The most important: new ice is less reflective than old ice, for most of the year, anyway. It absorbs more heat from the Sun, which means it doesn’t just melt faster: it actually speeds up its own melting. Here’s how it happens, according to Perovich. “Most of the precipitation in the Arctic,” he said, “happens at the end of summer and in the early fall.” When the snow first begins to fall, it builds on the multi-year ice, but disappears onto the patches of open ocean. Those patches eventually freeze, and the snow sticks there as well; it just forms a thinner layer. So for most of the winter, all of the ice, thick and thin, is covered with a brightly reflective blanket. That would be good as far as warming is concerned, except that for most of the winter, the Sun doesn’t rise. When the Sun finally does rise in spring, it melts the thinner snow first, forming heat-absorbing pools on the surface of the first-year ice. The older ice eventually catches up, forming pools of its own, but since the surface is crumpled, the ponds don’t spread as widely, and they absorb less heat. In short, the death spiral — where more melting leads to more melting — appears to be even steeper than anyone thought. That doesn’t mean that there’s less ice literally every year. The lowest levels ever recorded happened in September of 2007; since then, coverage has been bouncing around near, but not quite at, those historic lows, and first-year ice in the winter has been near its historic highs. “What it means,” Perovich said, “is that with more seasonal ice, the Arctic is more susceptible to an outlier kind of year.” If there’s significantly more heat in a particular year due to natural variations, in other words, there could be a huge loss of ice. It’s kind of like a staircase, Petrovic said. “It bounces around for a while, then there’s a drop to a new normal, then it bounces around.” The point, he said, is that “we now have a type of ice cover that’s even easier to knock over than it was before.” What that means is that at some point in the not too distant future, an unusually warm summer (even for a globally warming world) could knock the ice in the Arctic ocean down another major step, and take the world closer to the time when all of it vanishes — creating a new heat-trapping region where none existed before, and pushing climate change into an even higher gear. added by: coolplanet

What society are we growing up in, if we are unable to stop our children from being desensitized to violence?

by admin3

According to the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychological Association, American Academy of Family Physicians and American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry the media violence do affect children’s behavior, attitudes and values. As we all know today, children’s desensitization to violence has increased numerously, especially in the past few years. Just because, by the time a child is eighteen years old, he or she will witness on television 200,000 acts of violence including 40,000 of murders (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2005). Our society needs no more to ignore these problems of our future generations! What society are we growing up in, if we are unable to stop our children from being desensitized to violence? Today more than ever, children are becoming less scared of the everyday violent images they see on television or the Internet, neither what they hear on the radio. On December 30th, 2006 just about anyone was sitting in front of the computer screen watching the execution of Saddam Hussein’s Video, where his own death was recorded and posted all over the world for people to see, not only adults, but also children were possible to see a dead of a human being just by a click away. Our media makes us so desensitized, that it not only no more troubles us to see a death body, but also we immediately try to look for them on the internet so we have something to talk about over lunch with friends. Unfortunately, the internet is limitless and anyone can post, publish and visit practically anything. Of course there are websites that make you put your birth date to be able to enter, but people are not stupid, they can figure out what year makes them legal. Reflections of motherhood

by StuartEppsteiner

The hardest most rewarding experience any woman could ever have. My personal experience saw me going into trauma in labor as my son was transverse and I was not dilating. I was not prepared for a Caesarean as I know I should have been. The trauma became life threatening but some power decided i should stay here to raise him and he is good, decent and the joy of my life. Everything I do in speaking out for this planet is because I love him. He is my miracle and I am so proud to be his mother. This morning he gave me a rose and told me I was the best mother in the world. He told me I would always be the first person he would come to for advice and that he would always love me. A mother cannot ask for anymore than that in this life. I am truly blessed. And for all of the trauma, pain and hardship I endured in bringing him into the world, I would do it all again. To all those women who sacrifice everyday so that the world can be a little better for their children you have my respect. I think if I had a sign to hold that would tell myself something about motherhood before I had my son it would read, It Is So Well Worth It. Happy Mother's Day. added by: JanforGore

Val Kilmer Presents: Mark Twain and Mary Baker Eddy

by davehendricks

MARK TWAIN and MARY BAKER EDDY is an original screenplay by Val Kilmer. It’s a quirky, tender, tragicomic portrait of two contrasting lives, set against the backdrop of Gilded Age America. By 1900, Mark Twain was a colorful international celebrity — the most famous American in the world. He was also a comic genius who delighted in skewering religious hypocrisy with his irreverent humor. Eddy was nearly as famous and hugely controversial. Some said she was a spiritual genius. Her unconventional voice rankled male-dominated society and continues to spark debate a century later. In public, Twain satirized Eddy without mercy, using language that’s still wickedly funny. In private, he was consumed with questions about mind and body, life and death, illusion and reality, which he suspected only she could answer. Lest this sound too heavy — it’s not. With the exception of one tragic scene, the mood is playful, at times even giddy and surreal. Spiritual questions that resonate with contemporary audiences are touched on, not talked to death. Institutional religion gets a stake through the heart at the hands of Twain, the satiric master. Yet the screenplay as a whole rises above judgment of any sort. Ultimately, the audience finds itself face to face with two extraordinary individuals. Supposed antagonists, they had a genuine love for one another. And though both have been dead for a century, their voices still ring bright and true. Eddy In 1866, Mary Baker Eddy was destitute — widowed by one husband, abandoned by another, crippled in an accident, and hovering near death. Her sudden recovery marked not only her rebirth, but the emergence of a new religious movement in America. By curing hundreds of hopeless cases, Eddy revolutionized the concept of faith in its relationship to mind and body. She was a controversial original whose novel definition of God made it into Webster’s dictionary, and who taught her healing techniques to thousands despite massive opposition. Some of the most powerful men of her day — Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst, and Mark Twain — all published outrageous claims about her. They said she was insane, a fraud, a plagiarist, a charlatan, immoral, a thief, and even dead. Having invented yellow journalism, Pulitzer and Hearst could take anyone out. Eddy was the first woman to suffer the full impact of this practice. Pulitzer even backed a lawsuit that attempted to prove Eddy was insane and/or incompetent. Had the lawsuit succeeded, her popular church could have been dismantled, her publishing company closed, and her substantial assets seized. As a result of this onslaught, at age 88, Eddy founded The Christian Science Monitor. She sought to pioneer a new form of journalism that would “injure no man, but…bless all mankind.” Today, the Monitor is widely regarded as one of the world’s great newspapers and has, ironically, received seven Pulitzer Prizes. Twain Mark Twain once said of himself. “I’m not AN American; I’m THE American!” Considered the pioneer of the modern American novel, Twain became obsessed with Eddy in the last decade of his life. In 1907, he published a whole book attempting to discredit her. It’s considered his worst effort, not even mentioned by some biographers. Despite this, Twain had a fierce admiration for Eddy, both as a writer and as a spiritual thinker. He shared her critique of the religious orthodoxy of the day, and, despite himself, was attracted to her radical faith like a moth to a flame. Eddy and Twain both died one hundred years ago, in 1910. The Story Begins Despite Twain’s occasional articles and public comments about her, Eddy isn't thinking about him at all. To his chagrin, she’s completely absorbed in charting “the underlying reality of things.” But when America's man in white announces that he’s written a book about Eddy, the action begins. Twain’s comments make national headlines. But Eddy’s long-time assistant, Calvin Frye, shields her from the news by snipping her newspapers into swiss cheese. Eccentric and exasperating, Frye does his loyal best each day to protect Eddy from the intrusions of the world so that she can work. But after nearly 30 years of service without a day off, Frye is starting to, well, fry, and Eddy is losing valuable time to respond to Twain. Eddy has long since given up public life, but in response to so many inaccurate reports about her well being, she invites friends to visit her home. Newspapaers records that Eddy found herself greeting 12,000 people from the balcony of her country home. In our tale the visitors include Mark Twain. Though Twain and Eddy never met in real life, they no doubt imagined many encounters. This screenplay takes flight through their imagination — playing still further on Twain’s questions about mind and body, life and death, illusion and reality. Ultimately, MARK TWAIN and MARY BAKER EDDY is a classic love story in the spirit of DRIVING MISS DAISY. It touches on some of the most fundamental questions a person can ask, and at the same time captures the essence of two great American lives. Seattle Children’s Hospital Cancer Patient, Creates ‘Stronger’ Video

by davehendricks

A video featuring cancer-stricken children, their nurses, doctors and parents lip-synching and dancing to the popular Kelly Clarkson song “Stronger” has become an online sensation. The youngsters, many attached to IVs and holding signs that say “Stronger,” “Fighter” and “Hope,” dance along with parents and medical staff. One child even rides a bike through the hallways of the hematology oncology floor. The video is part of a creative arts program with cancer patients at Seattle Children's. The kids’ video went online May 6. It was the idea of 22-year-old Chris Rumble, a patient at the hospital who was diagnosed with leukemia in April. He wanted to do something to share with his old hockey team in the central Washington town of Wenatchee http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/231365/ added by: TravG73
